GEORGIA is excited to announce the last show of the season, a collaborative installation of Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #797 and Yumi Janairo Roth’s Straight Lines in Four Directions for Social Distancing (after Sol LeWitt) up for 24 HOURS on ELECTION DAY.

In the weeks leading up to Election Day, volunteers will draw LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #797 according to his instructions: “The first drafter has a black marker and makes an irregular horizontal line near the top of the wall. Then the second drafter tries to copy it (without touching it) using a red marker. The third drafter does the same, using a yellow marker. The fourth drafter does the same using a blue marker. Then the second drafter followed by the third and fourth copies the last line drawn until the bottom of the wall is reached.” The volunteers will be collaborating, yet working alone because of the pandemic.

At the beginning of the pandemic, artist Yumi Janairo Roth noticed essential businesses visually establishing social distancing. In grocery stores and home improvement centers improvised lines and shapes drawn with tape on the ground popped up to remind people where to stand safely and in which direction to walk. These marks are a visual reminder of the coronavirus as well as the new minimum distance we must keep between ourselves and other people. Roth began to cut stencils to spray paint social distancing boxes on the sidewalks where people could queue up for entry into stores or for services. However, rather than simply spray painting squares or lines on the sidewalk, Roth repurposed Sol LeWitt’s 1973, Straight Lines in Four Directions and All Their Possible Combinations.

The show will be open for 24 hours on Election Day. All day long, visitors are welcome to come in person to view the work or view the livestream of the show online: https://fb.watch/1xagtGuJHW/ When visiting in person please abide pandemic protocol: wear a mask. The garage door will be wide open allowing plenty of air flow and visitors will social distance according to Roth’s squares.

Yumi Janairo Roth was born in Eugene, OR and raised in Chicago, Manila, and suburban Washington DC. She currently lives and works in Boulder, Colorado where she is a professor of sculpture at the University of Colorado.

Sol LeWitt was an artist linked to various movements, including conceptual art and minimalism. The drawing at GEORGIA comes from his series of wall drawings for which he created minimal sets of guidelines so that his two-dimensional works could be drawn directly on the wall.
